The 50% Rule

A simple gut-check: if the repair cost is more than 50% of the price of a new system, replacement usually makes more financial sense, especially if your unit is getting up there in years.

Consider the Age of Your System

Most A/C units last 10-15 years with regular maintenance (yeah, we can talk about that too). If yours is in that range and needing a costly repair, it's worth weighing replacement, since older systems are also less efficient and more likely to need repeat repairs soon after.

Signs Pointing Toward Replacement

• Frequent breakdowns. If you're calling for repairs every season, the costs (and hassle) add up fast.

• Rising energy bills. An aging system loses efficiency, even if it's still technically working.

• Uneven cooling. Some rooms too warm, others too cold, despite a working thermostat.

• Uses R-22 refrigerant. This older refrigerant is being phased out and is increasingly expensive when a unit needs a recharge.

• Loud or unusual noises. Grinding, banging, or squealing often signal bigger issues ahead.

Signs a Repair Makes Sense

• The unit is less than 10 years old

• This is an isolated issue rather than a pattern of repeated problems

• The repair is minor relative to replacement cost

• Your system has been well-maintained with regular tune-ups
