The One Thermostat Habit Costing You Money Right Now

If your thermostat is doing gymnastics every time the weather flip-flops between 60 degrees and 95 in the same week, you're not alone. And if your instinct is to crank the AC down to 65 the second it gets hot, we need to talk…

Here's the tip: stop chasing the temperature.

Every time you drop your thermostat way below where you actually want to be ( thinking it'll cool the house faster) your system doesn't work any harder, it just runs longer than it needs to. That's wasted energy and unnecessary wear on your unit, especially during Denver's wild summer swings.

What to do instead:

  • Pick the temperature you actually want and leave it there. Your AC cools at the same rate no matter what number you punch in.

  • Give your system a break during peak heat (typically 2–6 PM) by setting it a few degrees higher. Denver's low humidity means it feels cooler than the number suggests.

  • If you're out of the house for more than a few hours, bump it up a few degrees instead of turning it off completely. Recovery costs more energy than steady, modest cooling.

  • A programmable or smart thermostat does all of this automatically. Worth the upgrade if you're still working the dial by hand.

Why it matters here specifically: Denver's altitude and dry air mean your system already works differently than one in a humid climate. Short bursts of extreme cooling settings don't help…steady, sensible settings do.

If your system is straining to keep up even with good thermostat habits, that's usually a sign of something else going on like low refrigerant, a dirty filter, or a unit that's simply aging out. That's where we come in!
